It is believed that the term Olympos is pre-Greek for "mountain". Over twenty peaks bore the name Olympos, and in many cases gave it the adjacent town or city. The most famous of which being the Thessalian peak in North East Greece, home of the Greek gods. The ancient city of Olympos, Turkey therefore takes its name from Tahtali dag (wooden mountain) an ancient Mt. Olympos situated ten kilometers to the north, with the eternal flames still burning bright in its foothills.
Olympos was one of the foremost cities in the ancient district of Lycia, forming part of the Lycian confederacy. It is held that the foundations of Olympos date back to the early Hellenistic period (circa 300BC). In the early stages of his conquest of the ancient world, Alexandra the Great wintered in Phaselis, a neighbouring city,
The first time Olympos was mentioned in historical records, was in 78BC when the Roman Governor in Cilcilia, Servilius Vatia conquered the chief pirate Zenicetes in a naval combat. Zenicetes had made Olympos his stronghold by terrorizing the towns and people within the coastline from the hidden havens of Porto Cenoviz and Sazak. The city was then declared "ager publicus", Roman property which could be given, sold or leased to individuals.
It is believed that the pirates used to make unusual sacrifices and celebrate mysterious rituals to the cult of Mithras. Becoming incredibly popular throughout the eastern world, Mithras was the Persian god of pure spirit and light in the system of Zoroaster.
Lycia was brought into the Roman Empire in 43AD and celebrations were held in honour of the god Hephaistos, the principal deity of the city. In 130AD, Emperor Hadrian also made a visit to the city.
During the Christianization of the Roman Empire, Olympos became the seat of a bishop. However, from the third century onwards, renewed attacks from pirates brought the city into a slow decline which meant a gradual loss of the importance and significance of the city.
There was a brief revival of the city in the eleventh and twelfth Centuries by the Genoese, Venetians and the Knights of Rhodes who rebuilt the city for use as a trading post during the crusades. It is believed that the city was been abandoned some time during the fifteenth century when the Ottoman Navy established its mastery over the Eastern Mediterranean.
Situated 250 metres above sea level in the foothills below Tahtali Dag (wooden mountain), lays the Yanatas burning stone. At present there are about 20 vents containing open flames set in an open rocky area within a forest. As early as the fourth century BC ancient authors mention these mysterious flames on Olympos Mountain. The ruins set in front of the flames are of a Byzantine church, however not much remains of the original sanctuary which was dedicated to Hephaestus. Analysis has reported a percentage of methane gas combusting from the vents. For optimum effect, best to view this spectacle at night, but don't forget to bring a torch!
The Yanartas comes from the myth of Bellerophon and the Chimera. "Bellerophon - Prince of Corinth" was sent to "Iobates - King of Lycia", by "Proitos - King of Argos" after alleged violations with Proitos's wife Stentorian. The Prince was sent with a secret message to have him killed. Iobates set Bellerophon the difficult task of killing the Chimera, a fire breathing monster who's enormous body was a made up of the head of a lion, the torso of a goat and the tail of a serpent.
Athena aided Bellerophon in having Pegasus, the winged horse, harnessed, being in favour with the gods. Armed with a spear of lead, he lanced the Chimera in the mouth. As a result, the lead turned molten and the mythical monster suffocated to death. Iobates then ordered him to fight the Solymi (Termessians), a fierce clan of soldiers and then the Amazons.
Succeeding he returned triumphant, despite being ambushed by the most braves of Lycian warriors. Iobates decided to honour him by giving him one of his daughters in marriage along with half of his kingdom.
Other versions of this myth tell of Bellerophon's attempt to fly to "heaven" and being bucked off by Pegasus at the gates and falling back to earth, where he wandered alone, hated by the gods.
Olympos forms part of the Olympos Bey daglari National Park located on Turkey's southern coastline in the province of Antalya. Nestled under the western fingers of the Taurus Mountains, snow clad peaks (winter) give way to a cedar and pine forest which sweeps down to the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean Sea.
Olympos is protected by conservation laws preventing the development of mass tourism. This helps maintain it’s unique environment, a natural paradise for everyone to enjoy. The land is home to many indigenous plants and abundant wildlife. The last captor of the ancient city was, and still is the nature that can be seen today. To walk around the ruins is a wondrous experience where ancient civilizations mingle with the exotic smells of bay and pine trees. The incredible Olympos beach is home not only to many a sun worshipper, during the dreamy summer nights the loggerhead turtle returns to her natal beach to nest before returning to her world under the sea.
